Storyline

When Anna and Mara come back from a holiday abroad they find out that a young Moroccan immigrant has been hiding in their car in order to cross the border. His name is Anis. He tells the two women that he’s lost his parents and that he’s heading to Milan in search of his uncle. But things don’t go very smoothly, and the young man eventually returns to the two women. Anis, taking advantage of Anna’s unexpressed wish for a child, will gradually enter the two women’s home and lives. Anna helps Anis get a job with his brother Salvio, despite the protests of Mara, who has to deal with her father’s illness and her more and more uncertain job at the factory. For a short while Anna, Mara and Anis seem to find a balance together and support one another, creating an unusual and tender ménage à trois. Nevertheless the balance is very ephemeral and it won’t last long: Mara’s father will die and she will surrender to a determined Anis, triggering off a chain of jealousy and suspicions. Anis will be fired by Salvio and eventually be rejected by Mara, whom he now is in love with. This bittersweet story tells explores our complex society based on work, globalization, racial interaction and independency, and how social differences are still strong enough to deeply affect human relationships as well as people’s wishes and affections.
