Storyline

6-year-old Jean is starting first grade. He looks forward to learn to read and write, so that he won't need Michelle, the girl next door, to read the cards he gets from his mother. She writes from around the world and tells about her wild adventures. 

Jean daydreams about her stories, but wishes that she would come home. He lives with his younger brother and his busy father who is the head of the local factory. In an attempt to make friends, Jean promises the other boys in his class that he can get a lot of steel balls for their ball game - but it means that he must steal them from his father's factory! This touching animation is a fine and delicate portrait of the sometimes difficult childhood from a young boy's perspective.
